Why I am Grateful for a Market Slowdown (and Why You might be too)

Why I am Grateful for a Market Slowdown (and why You Might be Too

I love a slowdown. It’s where creativity, clarity, and confidence grow.

Let’s be honest, friends — the market’s been giving us serious 2008 flashbacks, and a few of you newer agents are out there wondering if you should start applying at Timmies (Starbucks).

(Free coffee is tempting, but maybe hold off on that resume for now. ☕️)

If you joined real estate during the wild, wonderful, “multiple-offers-on-a-garden-shed” COVID years, you got your license and hit the ground running!

You felt like you were Selling Sunset (but in Nova Scotia)

And now… crickets. This slowdown might feel like a personal Holy s%@*t moment if you have never been through one before.

The phone’s quiet. (except for spam calls)
Open houses are silent, except for the crinkle of the final candy wrapper.
Even your mom’s asking, “Are you still doing that real estate thing?”

Welcome to the real world of real estate.

The Hard Truth (Delivered With Love and a Wink)

Realtor in front of computer

Every seasoned agent has lived through it — the no one’s buying, no one’s calling, clients are in a holding pattern season.

I remember my first slowdown: early 2000s; I was a single parent, working full-time in real estate, raising kids and volunteering.

I learned early on that the sentiment around the industry was, “You can’t be a part-time agent and be successful.”

Outside looking in, some agents even used my situation against me — as client was told, “She’s not a full-time agent; she’s a single parent with young kids ”

Here’s what they and maybe the public today,  don't consider:

Full time hours is not necessarily  9-5, Monday to Friday.

As I know the majority of agents do, I work evenings, weekends, holidays, and in-between moments outside of traditional work hours.   (Disclaimer- this may not be conducive to healthy lifestyle), but if the calculating hours dedicated to real estate, those hours would more than meet the status of being ‘full time’.

Unfortunately, depending on what market, geographically, seasonally, and what stage of career you are in, working full time in real estate doesn’t necessarily equate to a livable income.

I realize many agents will be a-gasp when I say this out loud, and feel that I am going to hurt my business by going against the rhetoric of you’re “not a good realtor if you aren’t doing it full time”.

But yes, when the market is slow, I seek out extra income.

There, I said it. It’s usually something freelance or casual, but flexible enough to allow for short notice showing requests and real estate my number one focus.

I liken it to having a hobby or playing a sport. I just work part-time in my personal time.

I am unapologetic about it because I know how dedicated I am, how hard I work in my business, for my clients and my family.

So, if you’re holding down a part-time job to keep your real estate career or family a float — you can, rightfully so, still call your self a a full-time agent.

As long as you are providing professional, ethical service to your clients,  you’re just doing what you need to do to keep your dream alive, your bills paid, and your license active.

The “I’m So Busy” Lie We Tell Ourselves

You know the line. Every agent’s default setting:
“How are you?”
“Oh, busy! So crazy!”

It’s like our industry’s chronic condition — Busynessitis.

We wear “busy” like a badge of honour, because society translates it to mean “successful.”

But here’s the thing — when most agents say they’re busy, they’re really answering a different question: “How many clients are you working with right now?”

The truth is, having a few signs on lawns doesn’t automatically make you the busiest or best agent in town.

So, are clients ringing your phone off the hook in a market slowdown? Probably not.

But in real estate, there’s always something to do — which means you can honestly say you’re busy if you’re filling your time with the right things.

A day in the life of a solo agent, when not working directly with clients, can still be packed with:

Digital marketing, content writing, video editing, accounting, ad campaigns, networking, database management, AI integration, and social media strategy… and the list goes on.

Let’s be honest — you can tell when agent have fewer leads in their pipeline;
That’s when they suddenly start advertising again.

They go for the lowest hanging fruit instead of building a foundational business.😉

Why I Actually Love the Slowdown

Call me strange, but I love this part of the cycle.

It’s like the quiet after a wild party — sure, there’s confetti on the cat and maybe a half-eaten cupcake on the counter, but now you finally have space to breathe, clean up, and plan the next great bash.

When the market’s on fire, we’re all in survival mode — chasing deals, juggling clients, scarfing down lunch in the car.

But in a slowdown?
That’s when we get to build.

This is your time to:
✅ Get organized
✅ Learn new tools (AI, video, automation — my happy place)
✅ Rebrand, reimagine, reconnect
✅ Lay the groundwork for your next busy season

Because the truth is — the market always comes back.

And when it does, the agents who used this time to grow (not gripe) are the ones who’ll fly past everyone else.

The Market’s Not Dead — It’s Just Meditating

What feels like a standstill is actually a recalibration.
Buyers are adjusting. Sellers are recalculating.

And you — yes, you — are refining your craft.

This is your opportunity to build habits that make you bulletproof for the next slowdown.
Because there will be another one — there always is.

And when that day comes, you’ll be the calm one sipping your coffee while everyone else panics on Facebook.

🌱 So, What Now?

  • Reconnect with your past clients and sphere
  • Take a course, attend a workshop, learn something new
  • Automate something (your future self will thank you)
  • Revisit your “why”

This is your building season.
Your time to strengthen, systemize, and strategize.

Because when the market heats up again — and it will — you’ll be ready, organized, and unstoppable.

So to all my fellow agents — especially those who’ve never seen a market like this:

Don’t panic. Don’t pout. Don’t post doom on Facebook.

Embrace the slowdown.
It’s not a setback — it’s a setup.

You’ve got this. 💪
